Cemeteries online or Virtual Cemeteries can be a wonderful way to honor your loved one for the world to see and even take part. Unlike traditional gravestones, these websites allow you more space and freedom to remember and celebrate someone’s life.

Who are they for? Just as with physical cemeteries, there are websites dedicated to almost anyone from Veterans to pets. No matter what the site, each offers a unique and respectful way to honor and commemorate your memories.

Virtual Gravestones Each site is different but most offer a space to post a picture and information about the deceased. In addition you can often submit remembrances or stories and send out emails alerting others on how to view what you have posted and how they might include their own thoughts as well. Many of these basic sites are free or request a small donation to keep them going.

On the other end of the spectrum are places which for a fee create a virtual gravestone which looks similar to a physical grave marker and can be designed almost anyway you chose. They then “place” your “gravestone” in a plot in the websites cemetery and when you view the marker it looks like you are seeing a photograph of your beautifully chosen and crafted gravestone set in a bucolic cemetery. Below the picture they will also offer you the same option for to include a photographs and remembrances.

Are they the future? Virtual Cemeteries can never completely replace the traditional cemetery. However, it does provide people whose loved ones have their physical selves disposed of in another manner, a venue to memorialize the departed’s life and invite people from everywhere to share in the memory.
